As shown in the ESO archival image series, astronomers later identified Beta Pictoris d in older observations, including archival images more than a decade old.

This series shows that Beta Pictoris d was already present in archival data, but had been difficult to isolate against the bright neighboring planet and the debris disk. Bonse et al.

The system’s debris disk acts like cosmic fog, scattering starlight and making faint planets hard to separate from the glare. Cifrum.kz recently covered another Webb observation of an exoplanet atmosphere; this discovery shows another side of Webb’s power — not only studying known worlds, but also finding planets hidden in existing data.

The annotated Webb image shows Beta Pictoris b and d relative to the blocked star, with Neptune orbit shown for scale.
